A Grade 6 pupil from Delta Park School, Amanda van der Westhuizen, made her school proud when she was recently chosen as the Petite Miss Nature Conservation South Africa.

The pageant is in its second year running and educates finalists in nature conservation. The finalists went to the Community Lead Animal Welfare (CLAW) in Roodepoort. They also visited Greenbeings at Norscot Nature Reserve and followed a programme on nature conservation.

Van der Westhuizen took part in the 7 to 12 age category and has many plans for nature conservation at her school. Van der Westhuizen is planning to raise funds to purchase a JoJo water tank which can be used at the school to water plants. Ms Anet Brown from Delta Park School said that Van der Westhuizen accompanied her on outreaches to the community.

Powerlifting

How strong are you? Neel Devnarain (16), a Grade 11 pupil at Delta Park School, and Ferndale resident, explained how powerlifting does not necessarily mean being big, it is how much you train through the pain that makes a person become stronger. “A powerlifter does not share his pain in training nor does he share his victory,” explained Devnarain.

Neel is currently competing at the Global Powerlifting World Championships in Las Vegas USA and has received a gold medal. This is after he qualified at the Rhino Powerlifting championships earlier this year. Neel has only been in training for 18 months so this is a fantastic achievement. We wish him well at the competition and look forward to some good results from him. We are very proud of you Neel.
